1) Check Your Contract Status: Before you switch, you’ll need to determine whether or not you’re bound by a contract with your current provider, and if so, how long you have left to fulfill the term and the cost and/or penalties of early cancellation (if any). You can usually find this information on your bill or by calling your energy provider. According to the Public Utility Commission, customers can switch providers without facing an early termination fee if they schedule the switch no earlier than 14 days before their current plan expires (for most fixed-rate plans).  Most variable-rate plans (month to month) don’t charge early termination fees, so customers on those plans can switch at any time.  You should receive a letter in the mail at least 30 days before your contract expires.

Variable-rate plans are flexible because you are not locked into a contract; however, you’ll pay a higher price in high-demand seasons like summer. A variable-rate plan might be ideal for you if you like to shop around and keep an eye on prices.

The opposite of fixed rate energy plans are variable rate plans. Your electricity rate fluctuates according to how the market changes due to supply and demand. If you have a knack for following market trends, a variable kWh rate could help you save cash over the short term when market prices dip. Exercise caution, however, because you may get hit with sudden price hikes that negatively affect your total electric bill.

California’s duck curve[cite] shows the difference between electricity demand and the amount of solar energy available throughout the day. On a sunny day, solar power floods the electricity generation market and then drops during sunless evening, when electricity demand peaks.[117]

In over a dozen states in the US, electricity providers can compete with each other to sell you electricity. This competition typically drives rates down and is made possible due to electricity deregulation.  Deregulation allows you to shop around at different companies to find the best deal, much like you would for a cell phone or cable TV service.

Energy sellers must provide collateral to ERCOT to cover expected future costs of buying wholesale electricity and if the companies don’t have enough capital, they get shut down. Breeze Energy, a Dallas-based electricity retailer that sold wind-energy plans to 9,800 customers including many in the Houston area, got caught in that financial squeeze when it defaulted on its collateral obligations.
